LOS ANGELES (OC).–House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), 53, fulfilled his promise to 79-year-old President Donald Trump pushing his big beautiful bill across the finish line, capping months of wrangling in the House and Senate, with accusations flying on both sides of the aisle. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), 54, vilified the legislation in typical Democrat partisan fashion calling in a criminal activity in the House. Jeffries complained of provisions to increase eligibility requirements for Medical and the SNAP [food stamps] program, both grossly exaggerated in terms of how many Medicaid recipients would lose their benefits. While the Congressional Budget office estimate about 11.8 million over 10 years, Democrats like Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said 17 million, just throwing out numbers to exaggerate the fallout from new work requirements.
President Donald Trump gets most of his main priorities started by his first term but dogged by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), fighting him tooth-and-nail about building a border wall. Now Trump gets much more than a border wall but $140 billion to beef up border security over the next 10 years. “With one big beautiful bill we are going to make this country stronger, safer and more prosperous that ever before,” Johnson said. Trump’s big beautiful bill secures his 2017 tax cuts, leaving corporate tax rates the lowest in generations. Democrats, of all groups, railed against the CBO’s forecast of $3.3 trillion in more debt over the next 10 years, something that doesn’t account for growth, clearly built into Trump’s budget plans. Trump wants the Federal Reserve Board to slash interest rates and let the mighty U.S. economy take off like a rocket.
Trump built plenty of tax stimulus into his big beautiful bill, enough to create a lasting bull market on Wall Street, something that could undermine the CBO’s dour forecasts for budget deficits and debt. If Trump gets the kind of rally on Wall Street already seen over the last two months, it’s conceivable that capital gains tax revenues will go through the roof, cutting into to federal budget deficits and borrowing requirements. Former President Bill Clinton was the recipient of massive capital gains revenues back in 1999, actually balancing the budget for a short time. All the Democrats and fake news complaints about the big beautiful bill could very easily turn out wrong. “This was a generational opportunity to deliver the most comprehensive and consequential set of conservative reforms in modern history, and that exactly what we’re doing,” said Repl Jodey Arrington (R-Tx.).
Democrats led by Jeffries denigrated the bill saying it would take food out of hungry babies’ mouths and rob the poor of their health insurance. “I never thought that I’d be on the House floor saying that this is a crime scene,” Jeffries said. “It’s a crime scene going after the health, and the safety, and the well-being of the American people,” Jeffries said, making one partisan statement after another. Democrats hope to ride the same narrative to take back the House in the 2026 Midterm elections. Calling Jeffries speech “a bunch of hogwash,” Rep. Jason Smith, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, rejected Democrats’ hyperbole. Republicans genuinely believe there’s enough stimulus in the big beautiful bill to add growth to the economy to reverse any loss of revenue from tax cuts. Trump’s a big believer that tax cuts help everyone.
Once the bill was approved in the House by a 218-214 margin, prompting cheers by Republicans, groans by Democrats knowing their opposition can only translate into turning the House back Democrat in 2026. But if the economy continues to grow like Trump expects, Democrats are going to have a tough sell taking back the House. Today’s liberal press supported Democrats contentions, exaggerating the downside to the bill, instead of talking up the possibility of an economic boom that would shrink federal deficits and reduce national debt. Democrats rely on their friends in the press to denigrate Trump’s bill as a giveaway to the rich, when, in fact, the working poor also get sizable tax breaks. Public opinion has been running negative against the bill with all the biased reporting. Only bull a market and booming economy will turn public opinion positive.
Trump got what he wanted with the kind to budget that funds the kind of programs, like border security, he promised during the campaign. When he opened the Department of Government Efficiency once led by billionaire Elon Musk, Trump created a lot of bad publicity for himself. It took months before Trump’s inner circle grew weary of Musk’s shenanigans, eventually pushing him out. Musk slashed many government jobs, some legal and some illegal, now forced to hire back some of the rifted employees. Trump has moved away from the Musk experiment that blew up in his face. Now the big beautiful bill gives Trump a more legitimate way to achieve his economic goals. Whatever Democrat complaints, Trump gets his economic agenda to improve the U.S. economy. If it backfires, then Democrats could get the last laugh in the 2026 Midterms.
