Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), 31, revealed the real reason why Democrats are pursuing unconstitutional impeachment charges against 74-year-old former President Donald Trump, having little to do with what happened Jan. 6. Democrats, led by 81-year-old House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), seek to impeach Trump for pure retaliation for what they express as the trauma, when at least 200 lawbreakers raided the Capitol, forcing members of Congress to flee to the basement in fear of their lives. No one, not even the former president, condoned the lawlessness and anarchy that occurred on Jan. 6. Sen. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) echoed Pelosi’s view on impeachment, stating that the Senate must expose to the country the role that Trump played in the Jan. 6 mayhem. Other Senators, like Tim Caine (D-Va.), asked that Trump be censured to avoid an impeachment trial.
Ocasio-Cortez rejected working with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tx.) who was slated to argue Jan. 6 to a joint session of Congress for a 10-day delay to investigate the Nov. 3, 2020 presidential election before certifying the Electoral College vote. “I am happy to work with Republicans on this issue [Robinhood app.] where there’s a common ground, but you almost had me murdered 3 weeks agao so you can sit this one out,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote, rejecting working with Cruz. Ocasio-Cortez and other Democrats, including Cruz’s hometown newspaper the Houston Chronicle, called for Cruz to resign. Cruz had nothing to do with the Jan. 6 riot and mob scene at the Capitol that scared members of Congress to the core. Ocasio-Cortez has been pointing fingers, like other Democrats, to find a scapegoat for the runaway crowd hysteria that upended the Capitol’s usual decorum and business.
Whether Pelosi, Schumer, Ocasio-Cortez or other Democrat realize it or not, impeaching Trump, now a private citizen, for the helter-skelter of Jan. 6 is completely inappropriate and unconstitutional. It’s understandable that anyone living through the mayhem would be left with lasting trauma, especially if they feared for their lives. But the Constitution is not designed as payback for trauma, it’s a living document about the rule of law in the United States. Constitutional government by the rule of law requires the elected officials follow the law, not make up phony charges against Trump or members of Congress that questioned the election results. To Pelosi, Schumer and Ocasio-Cortez, anyone questioning the Nov. 3, 2020 election results not only is treasonous but complicit with the violence that left eight U.S. citizens dead. Article 1 impeachment power is not designed for revenge.
Ocasio-Cortez mirrors the mob mentality among Democrats thinking they can wepaonize Article 1 authority to retaliate against Trump or anyone who questioned the election results like Cruz or Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) who was prepared to argue the case of election fraud. “Happy to work w/ almost any other GOP that aren’t trying to get me killed. In the meantime if you want to help you can resign . . . “ Ocasio-Cortz wrote. Since Ocasio-Cortez took an oath to defend the Constitution, she should accept that no one in the U.S. can be charged with a crime unless they broke the law. Trump, Cruz and Hawley didn’t break any laws, nor did they tell the lunatics that stormed the Capitol and vandalized government property to do so. Under which Constitution can Pelosi, Schumer or Ocasio-Cortez hold any U.S. citizens guilty of breaking the law, committing crimes without doing it?
Yes, all agree that Trump delivered a speech on Jan. 6 in which he expressed his views on what happened with the Nov. 3 election. If Trump told his audience to “fight like hell,” he wasn’t talking about storming the Capitol and defacing public property. He told his audience to “demonstrate peacefully” not “show weakness,” but never told anyone to break the law. How Ocasio-Cortez thinks that Cruz tried to get her or anyone else killed is beyond the pale. “You haven’t even apologized for the serious physical & mental harm you contributed to Capitol Police & custodial workers to your won fellow members of Congress . . .” Ocasio-Cortez said. Let’s get this straight. She thinks Cruz should apologize for the misanthropes, misfits and losers that stormed the Capitol Jan. 6. Trump, Cruz, Hawley or any other Republican didn’t condone the violence by a small fraction of Trump’s Jan. 6 audience.
Ocasio-Cortez gets headlines to blame Cruz for trying to kill her, when the Texas Senator had nothing to do with the Jan. 6 riot and mob scene. Today’s fake news media eggs on the most wild allegations about culpability for the Jan. 6 Capitol melee. Ocasio-Cortez talks about the eight deaths but said nothing about the scores of deaths from months of riots, looting, arson and anarchy over summer 2020. Whether Ocasio-Cortez or any other member of Congress life was threatened, the U.S. Constitution and rule of law can’t charge anyone with a crime unless they broke the law. Neither Trump, nor Cruz nor any other Republican bears the responsibility for the lawbreakers that stormed the Capitol Jan. 6. When, or if, the Senate meets to try Trump on “incitement of insurrection” Feb. 8, House managers will have to prove the Jan. 6 riot intended to overthrow the U.S. government.
