Taking the oath of office from 65-year-old Chief Justice of the Supreme Court John Roberts, 78-year-old President Joe Biden promised to unite the country after 74-year-old former President Donald Trump’s departure. Trump did not follow a centuries old tradition of witnessing firsthand one the dais Biden taking his oath. Trump, who was elected Jan. 8, 2016, spent four years rocking the boat, promising to “drain the swamp,” and instead wound up under water. Trump disrupted presidency was applauded by some tired of politics-as-usual but, in the end, created too much disruption even for his own Party glad to seem him go. While the media, in typical fashion, criticized Trump for breaking with tradition and not showing up today, he was represented by 62-year-old former Vice President Mike Pence. Truth be told, a Trump knew it, no one wanted him at today’s inauguration.
Biden set the right tone talking about unity and healing the country after last summer’s rude awakening, with race riots springing up around the nation. When Trump-friendly rioters swarmed the Capitol Jan. 6, it was one last reminder of how the former president rocked the boat in Washington. Unlike Biden, a 47-year-old Washington veteran, someone Trump called a swamp creature, he was elected in 2016 by an insurgent electorate willing to try something different, rather than see Bill and Hillary Clinton in the White House. Trump wasn’t well-received by the Republican Party in 2016, in large part because he went against conventional wisdom, calling out elected officials and the media for letting the country go down the wrong path While Democrats are not done torturing Trump yet, Trump introduced the concept of “fake news” into the U.S. and world vernacular.
Democrats, led by 80-year-old Trump enemy House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) have plans to impeach Trump for a second time in the U.S. Senate, hoping this time to get a conviction.for “incitement of insurrection,” for his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. Trump’s enemies in press and Democrat Party continue to call the Capitol riot an “insurrection,” to show Trump violated his oath of office and the Constitution. But as former U.S. Atty. Andrew McCarthy said, there’s little evidence that Capitol riots were an armed for a coup d’etat or rebellion. Rioters spent more time trespassing on Capitol grounds taking selfies than threatening to topple the U.S. government. Be that as it may, Pelosi intends to hold Trump’s feet to the fire for his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol melee. Democrats insist Trump incited and insurrection, even though he told no one in his Jan. 6 speech to break the law.
Bidien delivered a somber inaugural speech speaking of unity but going along with Democrats in the House and Senate looking to convict Trump of high-crimes-and-misdemeanors. “Today, on this January day, my whole soul is in this: Bringing America together, uniting our people, uniting our nation and I ask every American to join me in this cause,” Biden told a small audience on the west steps of the Capitol. If Joe really appealed for unity among the 75 million citizens that voted for Trump, you’d think he’d stoop the Capitol Hill show trial that most likely will result in acquittal. While it’s true Trump told the crowd he was robbed of a second term by corrupt Democrat election officials, he never told anyone to storm the capitol and vandalize government property. So his unity plea falls of deaf ears for nearly half of American voters that don’t want another impeachment trial.
After deploying 25,000 National Guard troops to prevent another disruption, the Capitol looked like an armed camp, more than the People’s House. Unlike former President Barack Obama who spoke to 1.8 milion visitors, Biden spoke to a small crowd, wowed by performances by Lady Gaga [National Anthem] Jennifer Lopez [This Land is Your Land]. Biden’s speed lacked energy, no matter how much he tried to show enthusiasm. But his speech was infused with yesterday’s memorial service for the more than 40,0,000 dead Americans from Covid-19. Make no mistake, Covid-19 upended Trump’s 2020 campaign, vulnerable to the daily criticism by Democrats and the media for his handling of the coronavirus global pandemic. But, truth be told, there’s not much else Trump could have done differently. Biden and his VP Kamala Harris did a good job of discrediting Trump over Covid-19.
Hinting at the Senate continuing with Trump’s Senate Impeachment trial, 60-year-old master-of-ceremonies Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) got in some political shots. “When an angry, violent mob staged an insurrection and desecrated this temple of democracy, it awaked us to our responsibilities as Americans,” Klobuchar said. “This is the day when our democracy picks itself up, brushes off the dust and does what American always does—goes forward as a nation.“ It’s difficult to see how the nation goes forward as the Senate revisits another controversial impeachment trial. Whether Democrats or the media like it or not, they’ll hear from Trump’s defense team that he’s being impeached for delivering a speech, since he asked no one to break the law. “Without unity, there is no peace, only bitterness and fury,” Biden said. How holding a Senate trial helps unity when Trump’s out of office is anyone’s guess?
