Hoping to pave the way for a 2020 presidential run, 69-year-old Sen. Elizabeth Warren thought she put her native American controversy to rest, releasing a DNA test performed by Stanford University genealogist Carlos Bustamante. Warren had been ridiculed by 72-year-old President Donald Trump as a “fraud” for highlighting her Native American heritage. Bustamante’s DNA test showed Warren had anywhere from 1/64th to 1,1024th Native American, meaning she has almost zero Native American DNA. Yet the Boston Globe published a story yesterday vindicating Warren, calling on Trump to apologize for questioning Warren’s ancestry. Genealogists familiar with DNA sampling say that whatever infinitesimal DNA shows up in Warren’s sample, it doesn’t specify any Native American Tribe or, for that matter, whether the DNA came from North, Central or South America.
If you read the Boston Globe’s story, you’d think that Warren was vindicated for claiming Native American ancestry. When applying to teach at Harvard University Law School, Warren checked the box that said Native American. If that’s not misrepresentation, then what is? Yet the highly partisan Boston Globe though it was doing Warren a favor confirming her infinitesimal DNA sample, prompting the Cherokee Nation to denounce Warren’s attempt to claim tribal ancestry. Democrats hoped it would set to rest any lingering doubts about Warrne’s dishonesty with respect to misrepresenting her Native American background. Asked whether Warren settled the score about her family background, Trump said he “was not impressed,” feeling no different about her being a “phony.” When the Cherokee Nation saw Warren’s PR stunt they responded harshly.
Taking Native American seriously, the Cherokee nation admonished Warren for using a DNA test to claim tribal ancestry. “Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any other tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong,” said Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. “It makes a mockery out of DNA tests and its legitimate uses while also dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, whose ancestors are well-documented and whose heritage is proven,” showing utter disgust for Warren the Boston Globe story heralding Warren’s DNA results. While Native Americans object to Trump calling Warren “Pocahontas,” they find Warren’s PR stunt far more offensive, especially for political purposes. Warren’s attempt to slap Trump backfired, creating even more controversy than before.
Warren tried her best to shift the blame on Trump when the Cherokee Nation’s response caused her more embarrassment. Having almost zero DNA but playing it up as proof of her Native American ancestry prompted Hoskin to set the record straight. Instead of apologizing for using a DNA test to justify her Native American claims, Warren shifted her attack back on Trump. Calling Trump’s “creepy physical threats” was the same language used by former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, hoping to smear Trump before the 2016 election. Now Warren does the same thing to give her cover from her outrageous claims of Native American heritage. Warren’s latest PR stunt all but rules her out of any 2020 presidential run. Her new DNA test gives voters a firsthand look at how she misrepresented her background to advance her career but, more importantly, try to stick it to Trump.
When a major newspaper like the Boston Globe creates news out of a disgraceful PR stunt, it tells you how partisan-and-biased today’s mainstream news. More at fault than Warren’s misrepresenting her ancestry, the Globe tried to lend legitimacy to her recent DNA test. Whatever personal tales Warren heard in her family, it should not have been part of her curriculum vitae or attempt to curry favor with Native tribes. After using dirty tricks and failing to keep Brett Kavanaugh off the Supreme Court, Democrats aren’t looking too good heading into the Nov. 8 Midterm election. They hoped for a “blue wave” to sweep them into the House and Senate, now look like they may not even get the House. Warren’s recent debacle helps energize the GOP, tired of listening to the mainstream press itemize Trump’s failures. Warren’s foiled PR stunt only makes Democrats look desperate.
Cherokee Nation’s Chuck Hoskin Jr. set the record straight, admonishing Warren for using a DNA test to claim her Native American ancestry. Turmp’s poking fun at Warren labeling her “Pocahontas” pales in comparison to Hoskin’s rebuke, telling Warren to stop claiming Native American ancestry. Warren’s latest PR stunt has all but sabotaged her 2020 presidental run, knowing the fake ancestry issues would hound her in any campaign. No matter how much Warren tries to attack Trump, she’s her worst enemy, not Trump. No one told Warren to claim Native American ancestry to advance her career or now run for president. Now that the Cherokee Nation spoke, Warren can only find a way a face-saving way out. Doubling-down on her DNA PR stunt only backfired, making her look worse than before. Dragging down the Boston Globe with her exposes for all to see what’s meant by media bias.
