Spending six years backing Syrian rebel groups to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, President Barack Obama finally got the truth as Syrian and Russian troops comb through rebel-held territories in East Aleppo. Uncovering mass graves, Russian Maj. Gen. Igor Knashenkov shared the grim findings clearing out opposition held areas of East Aleppo, showing evidence of torture and execution-style murders in rebel held areas.. Obama and Capitol Hill war hawks like Sen. John McCain (R-Az.) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) wholeheartedly backed the Saudi Arab Spring in Syria started March 15, 2011, seeking to topple al-Assad’s Shiite government to set up a Wahhabi Sunni regime. When Aleppo fell to Syrian and Russian forces Dec. 23, so-called moderate rebel atrocities became apparent. Obama’s policy of backing Saudi and Turkey-funded rebel groups blew up.
Combing through the rubble, Syrian and Russian forces revealed the torture and war crimes committed by Saudi, U.S. and Turkey backed opposition forces. White House and European Union officials portrayed al-Assad’s forces as committing atrocities when, prompting Obama Aug. 22, 2012 to not cross the “red line,” warning al-Assad against using chemical weapons. Whether al-Assad or rebels groups used chemical weapons is anyone’s guess. What’s known today is that Saudi, U.S. and Turkey backed opposition groups committed war crimes in Aleppo. Backing the Saudi proxy war in Syria, Obama helped create the worst humanitarian crisis since WWII, flooding the Mideast and Europe with over 12 million refugees. When you consider Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize Oct. 9, 2009 and decided to fund-and-arm rebels to topple a-Assad speaks volumes.
Saudi, U.S. and Turkey backed rebels didn’t leave Aleppo until the entire city was demolished by the Syrian Army and Russian Air Force. Yet even now, 69-year-old Geneva-based U.N. Special Syria peace envoy Staffan de Mistura placates the Saudis, telling them that there’s still room for negotiation on the fate of al-Assad. Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry stood on their heads for six years trying to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin to back the insurgency against al-Assad. Both insisted that the Syrian War wouldn’t end until al-Assad left Damascus. De Mistura knows now that al-Assad’s fate has been taken off the table. Why Obama stuck with the failed Saudi proxy war strategy in Syria is anyone’s guess. Now that he’s leaving office, Barack has bigger fish to fry trying to fund his ambition $2 billion presidential library, seeking hefty donations from foreign governments..
Uncovering atrocities in Saudi, U.S. and Turkey rebel-held Aleppo exposes the sad truth about U.S. and European Union propaganda regarding the Syrian War. For the man the won he Peace Prize, you’d think he would have seen the light. Obama held countless discussions with Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov about Russian objectives in Syria. Obama simply couldn’t stand up to Saudi Arabia, unable to tell the Saudis to stand down in Syria. President-elect Donald Trump looks to reverse Obama’s failed Syria policy. Instead of backing rebel groups, Trump plans to back Russian efforts to reinstate Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. War hawks like McCaiin and Graham won’t make Trump’s Russian reset easy, continuing to talk about backing Syrian rebels. Al-Assad’s well on his way—with Russian help—to reclaiming sovereignty over Syria.
McCain and Graham have real problems with Trump trying to reset U.S.-Russian relations. When you consider all the hot spots around the globe, you’d think that responsible members of Congress would like to change directions. Over his two terms, Obama drove U.S.-Russian relations to the lowest level since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, largely over Syria. While it’s true Russian President Vladimir Putin annexed Crimea, it’s also true the CIA sponsored a pro-Western coup Feb. 22, 2014 to topple the Russian-backed government of Viktor Yanukovich. Yet, instead of finding common ground with Russia, Obama worked with his counterparts at the European Union to alienate Putin. With Syria beating back Saudi, U.S. and Turkey funded rebels, it makes Obama’s foreign policy look amateurish. Six-years of Saudi, U.S. and Turkey funded proxy war backfired.
Finding mass graves and atrocities in rebel-controlled Aleppo proves Trump’s point that the U.S. didn’t have a clue who they were backing. Democratic nominee former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton showed no degree of separation on Syria from Obama and Capitol Hill war hawks. Her insistence on setting up a dangerous no-fly zone prompted German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeir to warn the world was dangerously close to WWIII. Fighting Cold War hysteria in Congress, Trump has his work cut out for him resetting U.S.-Russian relations. With Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announcing Dec. 19 he would not authorize a Select Committee to investigate Russian hacking, there’s still hope that Trump can repair U.S.-Russian relations. Improving relations with Moscow, Trump looks to restore common sense to U.S. foreign policy.
